Modular Expansion Joint

Modular EJ.jpg

The main purpose of a Modular Expansion Joint is to allow vehicles to cross large expansion gaps smoothly. It achieves this by dividing the wide expansion joint gap into a series of smaller compartments, or "cells." These cells operate in sequence to handle the required thermal movement of the bridge—expanding and contracting—while ensuring a stable, even surface for vehicle traffic. Modular Expansion Joints are typically used in scenarios where expansion joint movement exceeds 75 mm.

Additionally, these joints play a protective role for the bridge's superstructure and substructure. They incorporate watertight sealing components designed to block debris, water, and corrosive substances, such as de-icing chemicals, from infiltrating the expansion gaps, thereby safeguarding the bridge’s structural integrity.
